The pallet, crutch, and the escape wheel is called the "escapement." It is the heart of the timepiece. This is where the tick/tock originates. When the timepiece is in beat the tick and tock are in rhythm. You may have to bend the crutch to do this, but adjustments are addressed on the next web page.
The crutch is attached to the pallet as shown in the picture. It fits in a slot and is held in place with a coating of shellac.
